Royal Ascot is the pinnacle of flat racing in the UK and every trainer and owner dreams of having a runner and even better a winner. What makes Royal Ascot so competitive is that all horse have been prepped to perform their best for Royal Ascot and so not only are the best horses their but they will all be on their best form. Therefore, if a horse wins at Royal Ascot it's a great horse, no questions asked and builds hype around the horse to see what it can achieve. That's why I thought it might be a good idea to look at last years Royal Ascot winners and see where they are now and how well they are doing.
Queen Anne Stakes 2024 - Charyn
One day 1 of the Royal meeting in 2024, CHARYN kicked off the meeting with an amazing performance to win the Queen Anne by 2 Lengths after a brilliant ride by Silvestre De Sousa.

Since, winning the Queen Anne he ran 4 times, winning 2 of them before then being retired and going to Montfort et Preaux in France for a fee of €35,000. CHARYN reached a official rating of 116 coming into the Queen Anne and ended his career with and official rating of 124. He was a very exciting horse and a true group 1 performer, shame he was retired but it made sense at the same time.
Can this years Queen Anne favourite Rosallion have a career like CHARYNs, it's certainly held in high regards by Richard Hannon and has won at Royal Ascot before in the form of the St James Palace and is already rated 122 on official ratings.
KING CHARLES III - Asfoora
The Australian mare came to Royal Ascot not in the best form as it had not won a race in 2024, however, there was faith in the ability of ASFOORA as it was sent off at 5/1 and won very nicely and with an eye catching run from midfield to get to the line first under a great ride from Oisin Murphy. That would be it's only win in 2024 but is the win connections would've loved.

ASFOORA comes back to Royal Ascot this year with hopes of going back to back in this race and is up against some she beat last time. She is currently 6/1 in the market and some promising comments from Oisin Murphy after doing a piece of work the other day is building the hype and the faith in the mare again.
Queen Mary Stakes - Leovanni
Leovanni came into Royal Ascot with just the 1 win at Nottingham on debut but then won the Queen Mary very nicely, the future was looking bright however, has only raced 3 times since it's win at Ascot and has only achieved a best of 3rd place. Leovanni is lightly raced and the filly still has a big and long future ahead so nothing to worry about and will be interesting to see how she does as she grows older. She currently has an entry into the Commonwealth Cup this year but is currently priced at 20/1 and so opinions are she'll find it tough.

Even though Leovanni just had the one run and the win at Nottingham, she still went on to win at Royal Ascot very nicely for Wathnan racing. Wathnan also have a horse in the Queen Mary this year that has just ran the once and won at none other than Nottingham and is the favourite to win the race at 7/4 it's a highly exciting and well regarded filly by the name Zelaina.
Prince of Wales - Auguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin was a 1 in lifetime horse and was full of ability, the son of deep impact could be inconsistent at times but still managed to win half the races he ran in which is amazing considering they were the best races possible. Auguste Rodin also achieved nearly £5 million in prize money through his small career which is amazing.
Coming into Royal Ascot he had actually lost his last race after a small break but connections were sure he'd come on from the run and bounce back at Ascot, which he sure did and won the Prince of Waled stakes under a great ride from who else but Ryan Moore.

Auguste Rodin achieved a high of 125 on official ratings before dropping to 122 which is the number he would finish his racing career on as he is now at Coolmore Stud for a stud fee of €30,000. This years main chance in the market for the Prince of Wales renewal is Los Angeles (2/1) and so the same combination of Ryan Moore and Aiden O'Brien could land the spoils again.
Gold Cup - Kyprios
In coversations as the best stayer of all time, Kyprios is a horse that even the biggest stable only dream of having. He got better and better with age and did not suffer defeat in the whole of 2024 and both races he ran in 2025. The son of Galileo won 17 out of his 21 races and there aren't enough superlatives to describe his performances. Therefore, there was no surprise when it came to Gold Cup day last year that he was the 11/10f and only had company of Trawlerman as the rest of the pack were 6 Lengths behind Kyprios.

This was Kyprios' 2nd Gold Cup as he had just made it back to back wins after he crossed the line last year. Unfortunately, he would not get the chance to make it 3 Gold Cups in a row as, although there was no surprise he was the favourite in the market, he has recently been retired. Kyprios had injury issues in the past and when asked about the retirement Aiden O'Brien stated 'Kyprios was just the most incredible horse. Obviously, we had to be ultra-respectful of him. Always. When he was a little bit sore after his run at Leopardstown, we were never going to take any risks with him.' (RacingPost)
Coronation Stakes - Porta Fortuna
Porta Fortuna is probably Donnacha O'Brien best horse and has won 8 out of her 13 runs, she has won over £1 million in prize money and overturned the placings to get the better of the (then) 1000 guineas winner Elmalka to win this race. After the race, jockey Tom Marquand stated 'Porta Fortuna made it extremely easy. She is such a cool customer'.

She has carried on her success after last Royal Ascot with two group 1 wins and a group 2 win. This years Coronation Stakes looks set to be a good renewal with the unexposed and the exciting Zarigana set to go off as the favourite to win.
Jersey Stakes - Haatem
Haatem came into Royal Ascot in fine form with its last 3 races reading 1st,3rd and 2nd. With the 3rd coming in the English 2000 guineas and the 2nd coming in the Irish 2000 guineas. Haatem then went to Royal Ascot and won the Jersey Stakes nicely by fighting all the way to the line, a perfect reflection of how he does in most of his races.

Since the Royal Ascot win, he has only raced twice but both runs were under par and even came out of the placings in a listed race. He is still only 4 years old and has an entry into the Wolferton Stakes at this years Royal Ascot and so will be good to see if he can bounce back to winning ways. He is currently 5/1 and so the faith is very much there and it would be nice to see him win.
It's important to note that Wathnan bought Haatem just before Royal Ascot last year and were rewarded when he won the Jersey Stakes. Wathnan like to shop around and buy horses so they have the best possible chances of winning at Royal Ascot and this year is no different with Wathnan buying the likes of Lazzat, Flora of Bermuda, Night Raider, Sandal's song and more. This is on top of the army of horses they already have including Haatem and the exciting 2 year old's they have such as Zelaina, Postmodern, Underwriter etc.
Summary -
Winning at Royal Ascot often settles who the better horse is and can produce some very exciting horses to look out for and to follow in their career. It's highly competitive and all horses and yards have to perform to their best in order to win. Last years Royal Ascot was filled with talent and some have been retired such as Charyn, Auguste Rodin and Kyprios but others have had continuous success after royal ascot such as Porta Fortuna. There are even some returning to Royal Ascot such as Haatem and Asfoora to retain her title. Wathnan have purchased a lot of horses for this year and also have some great 2 year old horses such as Zelaina who took the same race as Leovanni did before winning the Queen Mary.
Will history repeat itself and where will this years winners be in a years time?
